Happy little strawberry plants in their new home! It took a bit to get there though. Once we made the barrels, see part 3, I really didn’t want the blue, so I spray painted them with Espresso spray paint. It did not turn out perfect, but I figure that the plants will grow up and cover.
After painting them, we drilled a few holes in the bottom and covered the bottom with river rock. Then because decent soil is expensive and I have to buy it, we cut the bottom off a black plastic pot, and filled up the middle of the barrel with our nasty clay. That meant that we could put the good soil around the outside and save a little money. Yup, saving where I can!
The strawberry plants are super sad since they were buried in the pile for at least a month. You can see where the shoots were trying to find some sunshine- we are coming for you- hang in there!
The dog was not helping- since laying down where-ever we are working seems to be her master plan…
At last in some soil where they can get the sunshine! OK, these poor plants look super sad and miserable, but I know they will come around! We were able to get about 35 plants in each barrel, so when we have roughly 24 barrels, that will end up being 840 plants. If I even get just 1 strawberry from each, I think I can freeze a bunch!
What a difference a couple weeks make! My sad looking little strawberry babies are thriving! Super easy to water too, just spray the barrels with water and it runs down and waters the plants. I even have some blooms already! I’m sure excited!
