So in one of my trips to the other side of the Country, I was helping the adult kiddo with her first house and taming the brush in the yard. I LOVE living in the country, but alas, this house is firmly located between many other houses. So what to do with the many bushes and sticks I got from attacking the tangled mess? A bonfire sounds like fun, but burning down the neighborhood, not so such, so I thought “Hugelkultur”! Brilliant! We did this on the homestead to deal with left over logging branches so it could work on a much smaller scale!
Cute pots are the answer- PLUS double money savings- don’t have to take the branches to the dump , AND you save on potting soil- Win!
The branches will keep the dirt out of the holes, make the pots a lot lighter and easier to move around, and contribute to dirt as it composts down. I’m brilliant- except…
I found this lovely mostly decomposed pile from some previous person in the yard that would be fantastic to use as my base over the sticks. After filling 2- yes 2- I noticed a LOT of movement in the dirt. It was getting late, and dark, so I’ll give myself some grace for not noticing sooner, and honestly- bugs are usually a good thing in your dirt!!!
NOPE- I remember hearing that termites are a thing out here, and had to Google ,but sure enough, I was filling up the bins with termites and putting them next to the house! WTH! TERMITES- ya know the things that will apparently eat your dang house! Just to be clear, I did dump them out, and as averse as I am to any chemicals- I am considering their early demise… and I only did it with 2, so 2 outa 3 ain’t bad.
