The weeds are taking over…
I just love, love, love strawberries and they are so easy to grow, and reproduce. Plus once you have the plants, so incredibly cheap to keep going. Each year you have new plants, and each year they faithfully produce-for free.
BUT holy cow, do the weeds want to take over! As you can see the weeks are as thick as the strawberries and in some places I can’t even find the plants!
When we got the place, we found these old raised beds lying around and repurposed them as strawberry beds. A friend had given me several flats of strawberries -ask around, usually someone is happy to help you thin out their beds. Strawberries reproduce by sending out cute little baby plants attached to the mama by basically a strawberry umbilical cord. Once the new baby has roots, the cord dies and viola, a new plant that will produce the next year!
However fun that might be, weeds like to reproduce just as fast and now here we are…plus the beds are falling apart and so I need to deal with it anyway.
Can you believe that around the weed infested beds, it used to be just sand? Yup, this is on the south side of the shop and when we put the beds there we leveled and it was beautiful clean sand. Of course in my wisdom, I didn’t put down weed block because there wasn’t a weed in sight! Grrr, of course that didn’t work out. Lesson learned.
So, the plan was to dig up the plants, clear this all back down, put down weedblock and put the strawberries in stacked tires with holes in it… we have a lot of tires so this seemed brilliant! Stay tuned for how that didn’t work out…
