Strawberry success- finally! Part 3

This idea should work- at least we can cut these!

Well the tires are out- see my last post- so these are used food grade canola oil barrels. Relatively cheap at $10 a piece, you can find them on Craigslist or FB Marketplace. We are starting out with 12. Now we could just drill those holds in it, but then how to get water in the holes? It just runs down the side. I really like the idea of “strawberry planters” and hubs figured out how to do something similar…

Blowtorch is awesome!

So if you cut a slice in the barrel with a skill saw, and then heat it up with the blow torch, you can shove in a wine bottle and end up with basically a strawberry planter with these cute little openings for your plants! You can also catch the barrel on fire, and you will need a LOT of wine bottles- not that that is really a problem….

We need more wine bottles…

Leave the bottles in until it cools and then “voila” very cool strawberry planters. The color can be seen from space, BUT a handy spray can of a color of your choice works amazing (and covers the burn marks). There is a bit of a learning curve to not melt or burn the barrels, but who really cares- they do the job. We were able to get 28 plants in a barrel PLUS 7 on the top for a total of 35 for each barrel…

I’ll show how I filled them and the finished product next time!
